| Eric Schreiber has announced his
move from PHEREC to Sarasota Mosquito Management Services. Although it is difficult to
imagine that any of our readers do not already know Eric, the newsletter Editor takes this
opportunity to write a tribute to his friend.
Eric is the most eclectic of our family. He is certainly the best read. Who else names
Camus as his favorite author? Who else is familiar with Kilgore Trout and Mr. Rosewater?
Who else has a music collection ranging from Bach to Frank Zappa? Lets face it, Eric
is a proud Dead Head who desperately misses Jerry Garcia.
Eric joined our laboratory in 1990 when PHEREC was still JAMSARL. His primary research
area was biological control and he did excellent work with Toxorhynchites splendens
(the anti-mosquito mosquito) and Mesocyclops longisetus, a
predacious copepod useful in biological control of early-instar mosquito larvae. Eric made
important contributions toward community involvement in source reduction of urban
container-breeding mosquitoes such as Aedes albopictus. Erics research
is characteristically well-designed, carefully researched and followed-through to
publication. During his 10 years at PHEREC he has authored or co-authored 21 articles and
4 book chapters. Perhaps most Florida mosquito workers know Eric because of his
enthusiastic support of the Dodd Short Courses, of which he is Co-Chair, along with Kellie
Etherson and John Gamble. Eric has been active in other regional workshops such as the
mosquito training program at The Wedge. Eric is an enthusiastic teacher evidenced by his
devotion to teaching at FAMU (5 hours drive/teaching day) where Eric has taught Integrated
Pest Management and Medical Entomology. Evidence of Erics energy is the fact that he
has performed extra-curricular duties as an adjunct at Gulf Coast Community College
teaching Introduction to Biology for Science Majors.
I will miss Eric. He is one of a kind. Keep well my friend! Do good work and keep in
touch.
