PHEREC Scientists Awarded Community Service Grants

Drs. John Smith and Jack Petersen were selected by Florida A&M University’s Department of Community Activities and Volunteer Services to receive $1500 and $1000, respectively, to establish community service projects in Panama City. The funds are part of a Board of Regents recommended and Florida Legislature authorized program to enhance and encourage more community involvement among FAMU faculty and students. Drs. .Smith and Petersen’s applications were selected among 50 projects vying for $26,000 in total grant funds. Dr. Smith will partner with his wife, Mrs. Ann Smith and Mrs. Joan Daly, kindergarten teachers at Patronis Elementary School to establish "hand-on" classroom and field experiences in entomology for approximately 25 regular and 10 special needs students. Dr. Petersen will collaborate with ZooWorld and New Horizons Learning Center to develop an Insect Zoo for classroom use.
