Annual "Fly-In" at Lee County Mosquito Control District

The Florida Mosquito Control Association Aerial Training Subcommittee "Fly-In and Workshop" was hosted by the Lee County Mosquito Control District, February 14-17, 2000.  The first two days were directed toward flight safety and general operations.  Those courses were presented by representatives of Bell Helicopter, Inc. and Phillips 66 Petroleum Company.

Tuesday evening, February 15, 2000, Dr. Walter J. Tabachnick and Mr. Mark Latham moderated an open discussion on the current understanding of West Nile Virus [WNV] and the proposed response, should WNV occur in Florida.  Dr. Jim Dukes of PHEREC gave an overview of efficacy data on aerial adulticides that has been generated at the Mulrennan Public Health Entomology Research and Education Center.

The Mosquito Control Operations Workshops held Wednesday and Thursday were dedicated primarily to aircraft calibration, droplet analysis, high-pressure systems and effects of drift on target and non-target species.  Dr. Zhong presented research on the impact of aerially applied Dibrom on honey bees.  Dr. Dukes served on the panel to calibrate aircraft spray systems for adulticide and larvicide droplets and coverage.
